Swanny17
Lovely wee place, little fishing town with some cracking wee streets unaffected by commercialism. Stunning beach, but you might struggle to go into the sea as the waves are enormous. What hotel you staying in?

manaliveits105
Alvor is great - it is the Irish resort - Albufaira being English and Vilamoura Dutch .I was there about 7 or 8 years ago and counted 10 Irish bars in what is quite a small place . There was a great Chinese along a small street to the left of the little main square - upstairs - great food and cheap as chips including wine . The main street with the bars and restaurants is good and not that big. There is a tiny Irish bar near the top on the right where the owner sung and played guitar which was great - and he soon sorted out the odd lairy English drunk who tried to gain entrance .Our hotel was really nice on the beach but a 4euro taxi ride into town- had a golf range- a Pestana I think and there were other Pestanas nearer the town centre. Recommend the pirate boat trip from Portomau and Lagos is worth a bus trip.

argyjambo
Off to Portugal on Tuesday. Going to a lovely 5-star hotel in Vilamoura. Been to Portugal many times in the past, favourite town is Lagos, least favourite is Albufiera. Just looking forward to some heat & a chilled time. Toxteth O'Grady
The fish is really good in that area, Dourada (a kind of sea bream) is excellent. Wine from Alentejo is cheap and pretty decent better value than the more famous Douro region. A nice glass of Port at the end of a meal is great. The lager type beers Superbock and Sagres are ok if you like that sort of thing, but Sagres also do a dark beer called Bohemia, this is really nice. Rastajambo
Is that near cascais or guincho? Had an ace holiday there 10 years ago no Cascais is an hour outside of Lisbon. Guincho is a great beach used to live 10 minutes away

beerandbovril
I have only ever stopped off here and the imperssion I got was that Alvor appears quite touristy and resort like in character but not as much as, say Albufeira. It is definitely smaller in scale and I'd say it isn't as overbearing as Albufeira. On my visit here I had a cracking steak in a place called Faustinos and the staff were great. I go to the Algarve every year and stay in either Olhao or Lagos which are both a bit more traditional and less touristy, in my opinion anyway. Depends on what you prefer I suppose.. Dusk_Till_Dawn
no Cascais is an hour outside of Lisbon. Guincho is a great beach used to live 10 minutes away Beach was sensational - although I could imagine dying in the sea there quite easily. Totally wild. Cascais is quality and so is Lisbon, especially at night. Loved that holiday

It is probably a bit too authentic for a lot of people but we love it.
