RobNox
1957-58 must have been entertaining to watch. +74 goal difference after 22 games is pretty spectacular. Hearts went on to establish the record for most goals scored in a season, which stands to this day. 132 goals scored in 34 games, 29 conceded, goal difference +103. We lost one game, to Clyde (who finished 4th). My mum was lucky enough to be supporting them at that time and still has programmes from that period. London Hearts can no doubt provide a full list, but I can remember from the previous results page in one of her programmes, we scored 9 goals twice that season, another game we hit 8 and at least once 7. Won 3-2 at Ibrox from 2-0 down.in Oct then 2-0 at Celtic in December followed by 'double' over Hibs on 1st Jan. League effectively won then. Though 'chucking' away the title in BOTH 1954 and 1957 was very fresh in the fans minds.

Players smoked and drunk the night before games in those days ffs. Aye fair enough the Real Madrid team from the 50's were pure gash and that Di stefano bloke was honking! Got news for you buddy a lot of guys still smoke (look no further than our last cup winning captain) and drink (Gazza & Rangers team when they were ripping up the SPL for fun). Doubt very much many of the players from back then were also sticking a proportion of their wages up their noses either! The world has changed massively since back then, the football was different but the best players still made it to the top and the standard in Scottish football was much closer to the top leagues than the gulf that exists now. Anyway, we are way off topic now. Guess we have to agree to disagree.
