Depth of squad

People keep trotting out about Hearts dropping points when our squad gets stretched.

I wondered if anyone knew how many players we have used so far in league games in comparisons to Rangers and Hibs,

Anyone have the stats?

Over to London Hearts?  He'll also probably give you a break down by age, minutes on the park, what they ate for breakfast etc.  I'm sure NASA are probably jealous at the database he has at his finger tips.  It impresses the hell out of me anyway!

London Hearts was the first name that came to mind for me too

Think we'll need to add a few players in January. Especially if Holt leaves (Not that he will, but he hasn't signed a new contract yet) and with Robinson being told he can leave if he finds another club. This'll leave us short of cover in midfield.

Was going to have a look, didn't think they would have Hibs and Rangers info though

I'll look into but was hoping someone would have the info to hand haha :)

Had a look, we have used 25 players including Gallaghers cameo at Ibrox and Oliver, Roy and Buchanan coming off the bench against Raith and Hibs

Don't know the Hibs and Rangers stats though

From what I can see looks like Hibs have used 21 players and Rangers 22. Both including players who have made 1 sub appearance

This would suggest we have had to use our squad more and dropped less points.

This contradicts a lot of the "expert" opinion

I think this myth was put to bed on Saturday. Even without our top scorer (Sow), our captain (Wilson), Prince and Carrick we still managed to win fairly comfortably. On top of that, the three substitutes used were very influential in the game and put in a great shift.

I got this from a Rangers fan after the final whistle. I pointed out that by the end of the game we were missing McHattie, Sow, Wilson, Buaben, Carrick and still saw fit to bench Nicholson, McGhee and Keatings, Eckersley( at the start).

His reply was.......

"Yea  but when injuries hit you'll be in bother"

Its like theyre malfunctioning robots.

I'm actually wondering what would be the 'worst' squad we could end up with if we only played first team players (from the section on the website).

Hamilton

McGhee Ozturk McKay Eckersley

Nicholson Holt Robinson Pallardo

El Haasnaoui Oliver

That team could probably still win most games. Not too bad depth...

Dont think you can put palardo in that team

Was a case of dropping Gomis and Prince. Could probably swap him with Walker or King but tried to base it on starts when everyone is available.

The Old Tolbooth

I love the fact that they haven't quite cottoned on yet that we've already been suffering from injuries and suspensions and appear to be coping very well, maybe one day the penny will drop, when it's too late! :D

The whole injuries and suspensions thing is their comfort blanket, they'll keep trotting it out even as we pick up win and after win with numerous players out injured.  To consider the alternative explanation, that we're the real deal and in for the long haul, doesn't bear thinking about for some.

We've actually been really unfortunate with injuries this season, I think we've already had something like ten players injured, some twice.

Paterson, McHattie, Wilson, Alexander, Gallacher, Sow, Buaben, Carrick, Keatings, El Hassanoui - I'm probably still missing one or two.

I do think the Rangers management and team buy into it, though. That is why they went out their way to try and seriously maim our players on Saturday - to cause said injuries.

Rangers have got 5 players who've played every game, inc sub appearances and 3 more who've only missed one. We've got 3, which will be down to 2 maximum after Qots when Gomis misses out.

We've both got 8 guys who've started 10 or more games. Of Those, our key players have started 93 games, to 101 from theirs.

The core of their team has been significantly less affected than ours so far.

Let them keep up the idea that injuries and suspensions will hamper us when they occur.

Lets just keep marching on.

I think the continued absence of Sow is having an impact on our performances.

Yes we are picking up the points however the actual performances against Raith, Hibs, Falkirk and Rangers have not been our best.

Fully acknowledge the teams effort has been fantastic and we are 9 points clear, however we could have dropped points in any of these matches.

Since Sow has been out we have just not been blowing teams away as we were in the early part of the season, and going by Robbie's comments today he could be out for weeks longer.

We have the best 'squad' in the Championship by a country mile.

We have a 'squad' which the majority of the Premiership will envy.

Can say both those things with absolute confidence and without a single element of dramatic exaggeration or anything like that.

Let them continue to believe we've not got cover and will struggle through the dark winter months.

unfortunate that it's come at a time when Carrick is out and Keatings and El Hass aren't at 100%.

Sow is a loss but it's the fact we've had effectively all our strikers out that's compounded it.

That still leaves us with Hamilton, Oliver, and the other young guys who have made sub appearances this season. Great depth.
