and Dumbarton called Dumbarton Harp, learning something new there.

Different Club

Dumbarton Harp played the majority of their existence in local football leagues, such as the Glasgow and District Junior League, which they joined in their inaugural season, or the Inter County Football League in season 1916?17. In 1910 they were champions of the Scottish Football Union which they left in 1912 to participate in the Scottish Reserve Football League.[1] They did play for a short spell in the Scottish Football League when it expanded to a three division set up in the 1920s. They finished tenth (out of 16 clubs) in the inaugural Division Three in the 1923?24 season,[3][4] but withdrew midway through the 1924?25 season when it became clear they could not meet their financial commitments.[3]

They played on for a while longer, again in local leagues, but had become defunct by around 1936.

What a brilliant thread and one I hope can be maintained as we recall the horrors of 100 years ago and the lads from Tynie who led the way for others to follow. HUGE thanks to London Hearts who yet again provide all the history required. BRILLIANT effort chaps - please keep it up. "The Rangers", "The Heart of Midlothian", "The Celtic"...... funny how history has a habit of repeating itself eh?

I loved the comment -

"The Hibernians who lost narrowly to Clyde, were pretty much the same Hibernians of last season"

A 100 years on and nothing much changed then!

Super photo of the match 12august1893. Is that the new stand in the background, without a roof?

I would think so. Stand didn't open until Queen's Park game on Sat 24 Oct 1914.

Uncanny that we have the same fixture 100 years later. Hopefully we'll get the same score line, I'd imagine that the attendance won't be very far away from that figure either. Hibs at home to Falkirk that day too, another draw perhaps?

Hearts had famously been knocked out of the Scottish Cup earlier in 1914. A crowd of 21,000 were there.

Can see this thread being an enjoyable read, although sad and poignant over the course of the year. As well as the football, think it's also important to note the progress of the war to get a full picture of what was happening at the time. Tomorrow also marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Mons, the first major conflict of the First World War and the first indication that this conflict was to be more than just another European war.

Agreed....think this can be an outstanding thread and tremendous respectful way for all of us to remember the Boys of McCrae's Battalion - putting into context their football careers against wider reports from the war. Let's not forget that the early 14-15 season was one to savour as the Hearts team were developing very well under the guidance of John McCartney, and starting to challenge the dominance from Celtic. I've posted before that it's remarkable how history has a habit of repeating itself...Celtic dominant, Raith Rovers 100 years ago this weekend, Hearts developing nicely under an astute coach etc. But history can also inform us - which is why this thread has the potential to develop into something extremely powerful.

I confess to being a luddite when it comes to posting etc, but if there's anyone on KB who can dovetail the historical aspects of the war with the BRILLIANT postings from our London Hearts chum - this could be really something to maintain going forward.

I'm more than happy to help out researching if someone points me in the right direction, but I'd need (BIG) help posting stuff !!!!
