Who did the photoshoot? Would it be Outs Photography by any chance? Owned by a York City and Hearts season ticket holder? Who was at Hampden on May 19th and Wembley May 20th?
York City did play in maroon in the 1970s. They had a Maroon strip with a big white "Y" on it. They were nicknamed the "Y-fronts". By the time Roy Kay had signed for them in 1978 they were playing in red/blue strips.

It made sense when Blackie said it because of all the painting & decorating bollocks but out of context, it's pretty meaningless.

"We'll paint the town red" is a) a pretty famous saying and b ) a term for a previous York kit launch so not really going to have people up at night wondering to be fair.
Mansfield had the Hearts song re-done (horrifically) who played York in the play-offs.
