Paulo Sergio hopes to be at Hearts next season
Thu, 08 Mar 2012 12:45:30 GMT
Paulo Sergio believes that he has the backing of the board at Hearts.
The Portuguese manager succeeded Jim Jefferies as manager in August and is contracted to the club until the end of the current campaign.
Despite having to cope with several off-the-field issues, Sergio has all but secured Hearts' place in the top six this season and is optimistic of staying on at the club beyond the current campaign.
Sergio said: "I speak very openly. I know it's in the interests of the board to keep me here - we've spoken already about that.
"I'm very happy. I feel that I belong to a fantastic club with great supporters, with great history, that are living a hard period.
"If I'm going to be (here) or not that depends on some details, but that's not important at this moment. What is important is that the board already have said to me - and we are working on the future of the club - they want me here next season.
"I'm happy, but if I'm going to be here or not we will see."
Hearts now face St Mirren, who they comfortably defeated when the two sides last met, but Sergio does not expect that to have too much of an influence on the outcome in the Quarter Final clash.
"Forget the 5-2. It's another game and we should be focused and at our best level to go through."
While Sergio would like to extend his stay at Tynecastle, he is a keen admirer of Hampden Park, and wants to take the club there by defeating St Mirren this weekend.
"It's a fantastic stadium, very nice. I had an opportunity to see the pitch and it's going to be great if we're going to be there, but for that we have to beat St Mirren."
He also joked that the only time he had visited the national stadium was for disciplinary reasons.

For me your future at the club depends on a positive result in the match this weekend. Lose tea is out unfortunately.

Yes. I do think there are problems with some of the ways we have played under Sergio and we are missing the right man to play 1 up front since we lost Kyle. But 1 up front works and we have done well before under it.
The under 19s are top of their league playing with 1 up front. The best teams in the world play with 1 up front. In fact the vast majority of teams in the world play with 1 up front. There are times 2 up front works, I am not going to disagree with that. But to disregard 1 up front as bluntly as you do is naive.

I'm not, but I think the manager probably knows more about these things than I do, and I hope those who make the decisions about who is manager next yeardo too.
(and it depends on the personnel at your disposal - nothing wrong with 1 up front if they can be joined quickly by three or four others when you have the ball IMO)

Sorry that I upset you with not elaborating.
It's clearly not worked for PS with 1 upfront. I'm old enough to know that this formation works with the right personel at your disposal.
If you looked at my earlier posts you'd see me say this. I don't blame the manager at all but you can only pee with the cock you have etc.
As things stand, with the squad we have IMO that we cannot play with 1 upfront.
Is this less blunt for you?

Ok so being down south I don't get to see much other than highlights/games on telly but I've read on here that we've had people upfront this season who have just not had the service?

Sorry I seem to upset you too, but I asked you would be happy with a new manager playing 1 up front to which you replied am I happy with 1 up front, which suggested to me you dont like 1 up front at any point.

Maybe Beattie can solve the 1 up front conundrum, but it's been quite a while since KK last played.

Admittedly I answer a question with question however I have no issue with 1 man upfront as stated in another of my posts.
PS could be one of the best managers we've had but he has a squad he's inherited plus it's unlikely he'll be able to bring in what he needs to implement his style.
My point which I didn't make as it was a one sentence remark is that we have shown with this squad IMO, we've played better with 2 upfront.

Sorry I got you started on this rearguard defence of your one liner with my somewhat sarcy response. I actually don't disagree at all with the poitns you are making in follow up, it was just the way your original remark came across.

Both formations have their positives and negatives and you simply just can't say that anything but 4-4-2 is a negative formation (not saying anyone on this thread has but it's been said before).
As far as I'm concerned, we aren't good enough to play 4-4-2 on a regular basis and playing a variation of 4-5-1 gets the best out of our midfield players.
Hope Sergio is here next season.

Though BHR comments about me letting PS pick the team. I think if you read most posts after our game you'll see most people make a comment re the formation.

I'll judge Paulo on next season if he stays , when alot of this seasons players are out of contract and he has to bring his own signings in to the club that's when we will see how good/bad he is

Hoping for a bit of a clear-out in the Summer, with a handful of swarthy Portugese playmakers in hairbands coming in to help the young lads along
An experienced goalkeeper with decent ability would also be good.

JJ's record away from home slaughters Sergio's.
Now you're backtracking. You clearly highlighted the 'style' of Sergio's teams away from home as your Gripe of the Day, and now you're defending JJ's away record which is quite different. Quite an inconsistent argument there, Drylaw Hearts. Which is how, incidentally, I'd describe JJ's away form from January 2011 onwards if I were being polite.
Not only was JJ's 'style' of play (that you suddenly care so much about) absolutely harrowing over that period, his record was abysmal as well. And yet with JJ's squad that he himself struggled to motivate after January, Sergio managed to get a result at a ground where JJ couldn't back in August.
So in summary, Sergio, with JJ's squad, won at Ibrox - a place where JJ failed to win with an identical squad (bar 1) and that turn around only took 7 months. It stands to reason that if we gave Sergio the time and money afforded to JJ to build his own team, form and style of play would improve.

To be fair, we were playing Rangers in very different circumstances to the opening day of the season.
